The Museum of Paleontology
and Historical Geology in Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski"
was opened with the collection of the Department of Paleontology.
The collection was gathered and classified by the first Bulgarian
geologist prof. Georgi Zlatarski. The first fossils were bought
from abroad, so that the students of the university could learn
more about the organisms that once inhabited our planet. The first
Bulgarian paleontological collections date from the beginning of
20th century. They were gathered by teachers and natural
history students in their practices and terrain works. Later, in
the 30s and 40s, many young geologists, finishing their PhD, bequeath
to the museum geological samples and paleontological specimens.
Today, there are thousands exhibits, which are used not only for
teaching, but also by foreign and Bulgarian scientists interested
in the Bulgarian paleontological achievements. Parallel to the thematic
collections of various authors, in the museum are preserved geological
maps of the country and regions near its borders, pictures and rock
samples from à number of geological systems found in Bulgaria. Even
though the museum represents a century work by many Bulgarian scientist,
its fossil fund is a little part of the fossil treasure in Bulgaria.
The Museum of Paleontology
and Historical Geology was arranged in its almost contemporary appearance
in 1965, immediately before the opening of the Karpato-Balkan Geological
Association's congress. With this arrangement the visitors can gain
a good concept of the enormous fossil treasure and the facial diversity
of the geological systems, found on Bulgarian territory. With the
exposition of diverse geological maps of various Bulgarian and foreign
geologists, the different aspects and historical conceptions of
the geological structure of our country can be traced.
Many specialists
from Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" and the Geology institute
in BAS took part in the organization and arrangement of the museum.
Great merits deserve the first Bulgarian paleontologist prof. P.
Bakalov, and also prof. V. Tzankov, prof. I. Nikolov, doc. E. Koiumdjieva,
prof. Doc. T. Nikolov, Elena Djonkjukova, Nonka Motekova, V. Gradeva
and many others.
